The 91Ώμ»ξΑΦ Visual Arts program has opened its first art exhibit of the academic year in the foyer of the Whatley Center for the Performing Arts. The show, which runs September 10β24, features the work of mixed media and abstract artist Michelle Dvorak. The exhibit is free and open to the public during regular business hours.
A special artist reception will be held on Thursday, September 25, at 12:30 p.m., giving the community an opportunity to meet Dvorak and learn more about her creative journey.
Dvorak traces her passion for art back to her childhood, where she was known for turning everyday objects into canvasesβeven her dolls and bedroom walls. Her artistic inspiration is deeply rooted in family, as she is the granddaughter of West Coast artist Phyllis Surlage.
After beginning her studies in commercial art, Dvorakβs path took an unexpected turn when she joined the United States Air Force. She spent three years stationed in Berlin, Germany, just before the fall of the Berlin Wallβan experience that shaped her worldview and artistic perspective.
Over the years, she has explored many creative careers, including cosmetology, teaching, interior design, home staging, furniture art, and faux painting. Today, her focus is on mixed media and abstract work, where she values the deeply personal connections viewers make with each piece.
βWhat I love about abstract art is that the perception of the piece is up to the viewer,β Dvorak explained. βThe best I can hope for my body of work is it makes you feel somethingβwhatever that may be, good or bad.β
Visitors are encouraged to stop by the Whatley Center foyer to experience Dvorakβs thought-provoking work and take part in 91Ώμ»ξΑΦβs celebration of the arts.
